VAT on your invoices

Which tax rates you can charge, why that depends on your own VAT registration, and how to fix it if ByteBill has it wrong.

On this page

The tax rates available on an invoice line depend on whether your organisation is registered for VAT. This is about you as the seller — not about your customer.

If you are VAT-registered

You can pick any of the standard PEPPOL VAT categories per line:

Category Code When
Standard S The normal rate for your country
Zero-rated Z Goods and services taxed at 0%
Exempt E Outside the scope of VAT
Reverse charge AE The buyer accounts for the VAT

If you are not VAT-registered

Your only valid option is Not subject to VAT (0%). ByteBill shows a reminder and sends your invoices without VAT.

This isn't a limitation we invented. Charging VAT you aren't registered to collect would be rejected by the network — and would be a problem with the tax authority even if it weren't. In Norway, registration is required once turnover passes the kr 50,000 threshold.

If you are registered but ByteBill hasn't noticed

Open the seller / VAT section on the invoice screen and enter your VAT number — your organisation number with the MVA suffix, for example NO999999999MVA. That enables charging VAT on your lines.

Where the VAT ends up

Every invoice you send posts to your ledger with the output VAT on its own account, and every purchase invoice posts its input VAT the same way. That is what makes your MVA-melding something ByteBill can assemble rather than something you have to reconstruct at the end of the term.
