Statutory returns

MVA-melding, A-melding, skattemelding and årsregnskap — prepared and validated by ByteBill, submitted by you.

On this page

ByteBill assembles your statutory returns from the books you already keep and validates them. You submit them with your own eID, through ByteBill.

The one hard rule: you submit, not us

You submit your own returns with your own eID, through ByteBill.

This is deliberate, and it protects you as much as it protects us. Under regnskapsførerloven, anyone who takes on accounting for others as a business must be an authorised accountant (autorisert regnskapsfører), supervised by Finanstilsynet. Filing your returns for you would walk toward that. By keeping the submission in your hands, ByteBill stays a software vendor — which is what you want a tool to be.

What ByteBill prepares

Return Authority Period Who
MVA-melding (VAT) Skatteetaten Bi-monthly term All VAT-registered
A-melding Skatteetaten / a-ordningen Calendar month Any employer with payroll
Skattemelding / næringsspesifikasjon Skatteetaten Annual ENK and AS
Aksjonærregisteroppgave (RF-1086) Skatteetaten Annual AS only
Årsregnskap Brønnøysund Annual AS only

How it works

  1. Prepare — ByteBill reads your ledger (or your posted payroll runs, for the A-melding) for the period and builds the return.
  2. Validate — it's checked against the official schema before you ever see a rejection from the authority.
  3. Submit — you submit it with your own eID, through ByteBill. You can also download the file.

Fixing a validation failure

If validation fails, the message tells you what's wrong — usually a voucher missing a VAT code, or an employee record missing a field the A-melding requires. Fix it in your books, prepare again, and the return rebuilds from the corrected data.

That's the advantage of a return assembled from the ledger: there's nothing to retype, so correcting the source corrects the return.

Before your first term

Two things are worth doing early rather than on the deadline:

  • Confirm your outstanding drafts. A return is built from posted vouchers. Anything sitting unconfirmed in the review inbox isn't in it.
  • Check your VAT registration status is right in the app. See VAT on your invoices.
