Running payroll
Employees, salary runs, country rules, and how a run posts to your ledger.
On this page
ByteBill runs basic payroll for small businesses and books the result to your accounts automatically.
Employees
Keep a record per employee. Each inherits the default income-tax percentage for your country, which you can then change per person.
For Norwegian employers, the employee record also holds the details the A-melding legally needs to identify the income recipient and describe the employment relationship. Filling these in as you go means the A-melding assembles cleanly later — see Statutory returns.
Country rules
Your country is derived from your organisation; you never choose it. Each country pack knows which components exist and which accounts they post to.
Norway
- Feriepenger (holiday pay)
- Arbeidsgiveravgift (employer's national insurance)
- OTP (mandatory occupational pension)
United Arab Emirates
- End-of-service gratuity
Tax reference rates
The rates that drive those calculations are seeded from the country pack and are editable. When a rate changes, you update it in one place rather than waiting for an app release.
Running a salary period
- Open payroll and start a run for the period.
- Check each employee's payslip — salary lines, the automatic components, and the tax deduction.
- Adjust anything that needs adjusting; the run recomputes.
- Post the run.
What posting does
The run aggregates every payslip into one balanced payroll voucher in your ledger, with each component on the account its country pack specifies.
A payslip PDF is generated for each employee and archived.
What payroll doesn't do
- It doesn't move money. Paying your employees is a bank transfer you make, recorded as a separate payment.
- It doesn't file the A-melding for you — it prepares the file and you submit it.
- It doesn't do progressive year-end tax settlement.
